Korea's White Day (화이트데이)

Valentine's Day is celebrated all over the world every February 14. But do you know that in Korea, they also have "White Day" (화이트데이)? White Day is observed in Korea every March 14, one month after the popular Valentine's Day. It is the time when Korean men give candies to their girlfriends or women who gave them chocolates on Valentine's Day.

This custom is actually originated in Japan in 1970's. White Day is observed in Asian countries such as Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. We also know that in these countries, women give chocolates to their boyfriends, husbands or men they like on Valentine's Day.

I first heard about White Day two years ago from my Korean students. According to them, they also have so called "Black Day" for single people. How unique and interesting! Haha! I told my students that in the Philippines, it's usual for women to receive flowers and chocolates from men on Valentine's Day.
Don't you think it's unfair for women to receive candies instead of chocolates when they give chocolates to their men on Valentine's Day? hehe! Anyway, I still find it cute and thoughtful if I see men on malls/stores shopping candies for their special girl.

 Today's White Day...
